That sort of thing is usually caused by unburned fuel that builds up in the exhaust that gets hot, ignites and blows up - thus the bang.
When you shut the engine down, it keeps spinning a bit, i.e. keeps drawing fuel with no ignition - thus the accumlation.
To control this, a lower idle speed for the engine or a electrically controlled main jet in the carburetor is used.
In many applications with carbruetors, an electric solenoid is used to keep the engine idle RPM at desired speed when the ignition is on - but once turned off - it collapses and the throttle comes close to closing - and the backfire is eliminated.
I don't know what controls exist on your engine - but probably just lowering the engine idle speed will fix the problem.
