A trailer like a cattle trailer uses the solid parts of the side to prevent it from bending. It is similar to the difference between a piece of angle iron and a piece of flat metal. Without the side piece (vertical) the trailer will not be as strong. Depending upon what he wants to haul that may or may not be a problem.
