I have a 2001 400 sporstman and haven"t had problems shifting it. Could be something worn in there. They are run by a centrifical(sp)clutch and driven with a belt. Is it possible the belt is worn? I know I burned a flat spot on mine pulling my 8n home uphill after I burned out the coil . Easy to replace. Hope you find the problem. Check with the dealer and they will help you out I"m sure.-Bill
