Allen don't do it running that is why they give ya the setting they way they do , what happened is the end of your rockers is woren and you bridged it by tryen to get the full feeler gauge between the rocker and the valve stem , put you glasses on and look at how the rocker rides on the stem and you will see what i am talken about and roll her over twice you'll find a couple on the second round , i use my points feeler gauge to set the valves on them as it has the narrow blades and also the oil that is setting in the cup of the lifter can throw ya off on valve set . And never even think of tryen to do a valve set on a DIESEL running as you can put the head of the valve into the top of the piston in a heart beat.
