Depends on how you look at it. A cold engine puffs white smoke due to insufficient heat to burn it. An engine with a really bad injector will do the same. I guess I should have said white smoke is raw fuel coming out the exhaust. Black smoke is from not enough air for the amount of fuel, usually in a turboed engine where the turbo isn't up to speed yet. I guess we were both correct.
