Ok guys figure this one out

Got a battery in one of may tractors. Had the 1.5 charger on it for the last few days, but that didn't help it any. Then I put the 40 amp on and left it on all night. Now after and hour with the 40 amp on it the engine would turn over just fine. But after all night all it would do was sort of try to turn over. So I guess the battery is bad and I will need to replace it. But why in the world would it work after 1 hour of chargeing and then not after all night?? Thanks
