Mowers from Ferris Industries are generally considered the machines to beat in our area (Central New York). I cut about 2 acres with my Ferris IS1500Z with a 25 hp Kawasaki in a hurry. The IS in the model number stands for "Independent Suspension", so the ride isn't bad either! If your son's trees are evergreens with low-hanging branches, he might prefer the Ferris Procut 20 which is a 3-wheeled mower with a big deck out in front of the two front wheels and the third (steering) wheel tucked in under the seat. It's great for reaching in under those branches.
