My wife rides horses in the mountains a lot, with her dogs- the dogs get a lot of ticks. She found the neatest gizmo to remove them- looks like a plastic one-teaspoon kitchen measuring spoon, with a slot with beveled sides cut into it. Removes them slick as can be, and never leaves any part of the tick in the critter (every one I've removed was still alive and kickin' after removal). At Pet Smart, and other pet stores- called Tick Off.
