O/T '99 Wrangler diagnostic codes

My wife has a '99 Wrangler, 6 cyl, 5 speed. Occasionally, some or all of the instruments stop working, and the digital mileage display shows 'no buS' or 'no bu5', not sure because on a digital display 'S' and '5' look alike. The only recall info I can find on this vehicle refers to a loose ground wire under the dash, which I've already checked. Anybody familiar with this code, or have any ideas? I hate to keep spending $40 to have codes read with a scan tool and not have any success locating the actual problem.
