Grandpa always said "There's more than one way to skin a cat..." There's nothing at all wrong with using your head and being a little unorthodox on occasion, especially if it works.....That said, look at a manual for a B series Cummins sometime. They have a special tool that you stick through the holes in the block after you take the cam out that allows you to take the lifters out and then put them back in without taking the head off. To hold them in place when you take the cam out you put sticks in each set and then band them together just like you did your rods. Once the cam is out you push the one tool in where the cam once was and use another tool with a string to lower the lifters down into the first tool. Going back you just reverse the proceedure. Like I said, check out a manual if you ever get a chance and you'll see another really unorthodox proceedure.
