See if you can find a Chesapeake Bay retriever. Very tough, good-natured dog. Not as popular as Labs as they can be very stubborn. Good around kids and farm animals, but they'll kill any wild critters they can get ahold of.

Chesapeakes were supposedly bred from Newfoundland dogs that were mixed with local hounds in the Virginia tidewater country. The Chesapeake Bay retriever was the first breed recognized by the AKC.
