In my post below I stated the steering wheel came off the tractor. We owned a 574 in the '70s and had the same thing happen. In both cases the cap on the steering wheel became damaged and was removed. Both tractors sat outside. Water will pool in the center of the steering wheel and there is a path for it to get to the top of the steering motor. A retaining ring holding the input shaft into the motor rusts away, allowing the steering wheel and shaft to come out of the motor. It's been almost 30 years since ours failed, and I haven't seen the neighbor's so my description may be a little off. Anyone out there with an IH utility tractor of this series, if the cap on your steering wheel is gone, check that ring and replace that cap. John
