Enrich the mortar by adding 25% to 35% more pure Portland to it and also add the glass fibers to the mix. I did that on mine and it hasn't cracked in over 12 years now. If the bricks are spauling at the top then very likely that the flue crocks are leaking either at the seams or at cracks in the crocks. The flue gasses generate moisture or condensation which gets outside the crocks, penetrates the bricks then freezes in the uppermost bricks and causes them to spaul.
