IF the resistance of the engine is greater than the resistance of either wheel and the ground the point of least resistance will rotate. If you have the tractor in a lower gear it will take more traction from both wheels to make the engine turn but it will turn faster. The engine will turn the easiest if you use the gear with the fastest travel speed on the tractor. You will observe the same thing with the rear axle of a truck. The differential distributes the rotation of the input or drive shaft to the output shafts (wheels) proportionally to the ease of rotation. In pull starting you are transferring the rotation of the wheels achieved from traction with the ground to the crankshaft of the engine. If the resistance of the crankshaft to rotate is high enough both wheels will slide if they have equal traction or the side with less traction will turn backwards due to the rotational force being transferred accros the differential instead of to the crankshaft.
