I can't see it making very good dry hay, it may be ok in the silo. Rye, barley, wheat, etc. that have beards, need to be harvested at just the right time so the beard isn't too hard.. or sumthing like that... so they don't get lodged in the cow's gums and cause sores and other problems in the cows mouth.

Can't say exactly when that is, my dad watches it and tells me when we need to cut it, so I get the tractor and haybine ready and get to it.

One other note, they should be mixed with other feed like corn silage if possible. last year we did rye and while it had a great stand and we put it up with lots of dried mollasis in the silo, the girls just didn't like it much and the milk dropped off a cliff.

This year we did peas & tritcal, plus some oats because we ran out of the other seed. They liked it a lot better and the milk didn't drop off quite as bad, but nothing makes them milk like corn though.
