I agree with checking the simple (cheap) things first. The simplest thing that could cause a diesel to miss under load is insufficient fuel delivery and the simplest component that could cause that is the fuel filter(s). My tractor was missing under load last week and smoking when it missed. I replaced the fuel filter and now it runs like a top. I hope this is the case with yours.
