For an outside dog, Frontline is the way to go. For a dog that spends a lot of time indoors, "The Program" is what you need. It breaks the flea's reproductive cycle, so even if they leave the dog they can't reproduce.

You can get Frontline and the Program from your vet, some pet supply stores carry them as well. Or you can get them online.
