You should have 2 pick-up tubes, one short and one long. The short one draws from a small cup in the tank under the carb. The short one is for start up. It sounds like you are getting enough fuel to start but the long tube is split or blocked with dirt or varnish. Pull the long tube out, squirt some carb cleaner in it and carefully push a straight piece of wire coat hanger thru the tube (not the screen though). Once clean, pressure test it by covering the screen end with your finger and blow into it. If its cracked you'll know right away (if you haven't already seen it).
