Let him do the welds- if they're bad, you can show him how to grind them out and re-do. Its a forge, not a car- if it falls apart in the middle of the shop floor, nobody's going to get wrapped around a tree. Dealing with failures is just as much a part of the learning process as always being successful, which is something that the educational system seems to have lost in the last 30 years or so.
