I have a 48- 1 1/2 ton Chev Dump truck that was changed over to 12 volts 20 years ago & it still has 6 volt starter in it . I know a few 8-N's that have been running years with a 12 volt sys & 6 volt starter . The 12 volt starter pulls about 200 Amps starting & a 6 Volt pulls about 400 Amps . thus heaver windings they will take load if you don't set & Grind them until the battery goes dead . If engine don't start in the first few Seconds it isn't going to . We used to change engines Olds to Ford in the 50's used 12 volt system with 6 Volt starter worked Great would give a little more punch to start High compression engines 10 1/2 to 1 .
