For a non-engineer, the best rule of thumb is to notice what HP was there before; what was on the original equipment. HP is a function of speed (rpm) and torque (turning effort). Gearing (transmissions) is used to "mate" engines/motors to appliances. One horsepower is the power necessary to lift 33,000 lb 1 foot in one minute. Two HP could lift 66,000 lb 1 foot in one minute, or 33,000 lb 2 ft in one minute, or 33,000 lb 1 foot in 1/2 minute. Electric motors are generally rated to about true output. IC automotive engines are usually rated at gross HP; i.e., to include the power necessary to overcome internal opposition for operating valves and fans, moving pistons, etc.; which may be considerable. I understand that the Nebraska ratings of farm tractors is net.
