Allan,I can relate to your problem, I am in the process of rebuilding a motor on a tactor I purchased not running. It is a JD industrial 4 cylinder diesel with 219 engine. Water in the oil was from a hole in the piston sleeve, crank needs turning, cam is bad and needs regrind. Now to top it off the mains have spun in the block. Just need to keep going, can't stop now.
