How to make 24 volts

How do I wire two 12 volt batteries together to produce 24 volts? I have an old airforce surplus gas powered air compressor that is 24volt. I can start it on a 12 volter if the compressor isn"t belted up, I just need the right number of amps with the compressor belted on. THANKS!!!
