After consulting a field handbook on N. American reptiles, it appears that the resident was/is a Northern Water Snake, which is the same size and very much the same markings as a copperhead. While they are not poisonous or particularly aggressive they still can deliver a freely bleeding bite when called upon to do so, or so says the book. Which kind of gets back to mice residing in farm equipment. There could then be other things taking up residence there too. Might do to whap holes, tool or chain cavities etc with a wrench if the machine in question has sat a while, before sticking one's hand in where one can't see.
