I'm usually in the A/C section, but saw this and thought I might be able to help. My van(97 Dodge Caravan) did this about 2 months ago. Come to find out there is some kind of solenoid on the pump unit that was working intermittently. Bad thing was I had to replace the pump to replace the solenoid. Your symptoms sound just like mine and the tech I took it to is a friend of mine and a 5 star dodge mechanic(did the work after hours)and said that there has been a lot of these solenoids going bad. Hope this helps. Just a note. No codes were present in the computer and it was not an EGR Valve.
