The 504 Case computes to be an 8.3 liter engine. The 466 IH engine computes to 7.6 liters. 404 engines are 6.6 liters. You are correct about lugability. Among the limited choices forced on us today in the medium size tractor market,I think the 5.9 is a good choice. Smaller displacement engines, take up less space under the hood and costless to manufacture. HOWEVER, The small displacement engines have little or no flatness to their HP curve and, therefore, this forces a lot of gear shifting/jerking when pulling heavy loads. The old Case engine had a more flat HP curve and would power thru momentary tough spots.
