In 1960 after 4 years in the military I farmed with my father for 3 years. I found that we were not compatible in various ways working together. I left and moved to the Twin cities for employment. Within 2 years I moved back into the home area, buying a 80 acre farm with my GI benefits, later used the benefits for 3 years of education while working a part and some times full job in manufacturing. We have since added 80 acres, retired from my engineering position and now at age 70 a full time farmer after part time for 40 years. My largest asset is my wife, as we borrowed money to complete her education which provided additional income and college educations for our 3 kids. The bottom line is that my father and I remained very close after my leaving as I harvested his crops for many years until he passed away and I think he finally understood my reasons for leaving.
