Hope I'm not too late on this but we used to grow ten or so acres for many years. We evolved to use a Cole 12MX one row planter set up on a three point hitch on a small tractor. They have a large seed plate setup uniquely designed for a large seed. (a small JD planter with manually "opened-up" plastic plates might work too) We planted on a seven foot row and 18 inches between single seeds in gravel loam soil. We then ran a tractor driven rototiller between the rows for most weeds and band sprayed over the top for grass and fungus things. There is a chemical that will kill grass and not pumpkins. Maybe Poast? We did not like the three seeds to a hill thing because of too much plant competition and the difficulty of mechanical weeding. We got bigger pumpkins and better results with one seed.
