I think it was most often used during the second world war. I have a book on it that details systems sold during WW2 in Australia to be added to cars. Kind of a complicated system and pretty heavy to drag all over the land but doesn"t require any sophisticated technology. They can run on coal and wood but it appears that charcoal was the preferred fuel. I haven"t done anything with it yet but the book gives enough information to build your own apparatus and at some point I would like to give it a whirl. Most of them had the system mounted directly to the tractor but I think it might be better if you had a production system and were able to bottle it and use it like LPG.
