I agree with TomH, don't ever ever use barbed wire for electric fence. Use the small gauge wire and the plastic stand offs for the post. Be sure that you have signs saying "electric fence" for you neighbors. A good law suit awaits if not notice posted. You can run hot wire in both directions around the area, but not connected at the back side where they come together. Use good insulated wire and plastic stand offs when you go around a building. I'm assuming you are going to use a solar powered charger, if not then put the charger near one of the buildings if its an AC unit.
Also, watch the cows, if that is what you are putting on the acreage. They will become use to the sound in the wire and will know when there is no charge in the wire. The charge is a pulse, it is not a continuely charge. To get around the cows getting use to the pulse, turn the charger off and then back on periodicly so that it will change the timing. Again, never use barbed wire for electric fence. HTH
