I have never overhauled an engine myself that was turbocharge, but i read in an oliver repair manual that you are suppose to run an engine for a short time after a rebuild before reinstalling a turbo. It said this way no metal fines are pumped into the turbo bearings, thats just what my I&T manual said, don't know if this is why your turbo went out after an overhaul or if its even posssible to run an intercooled engine without a turbo for a short time, just my .02, good luck.
