on my 1990 i put lockout hubs on it and just locked the slide coupler over to the right with the fork on the back side of the slid coupler but on the 96 you can't put lockout hubs on it so i fixed it with a new coupler and shaft was not that costly to do both my trucks have over 200,000 miles and plow snow all the time. and what you said about off roading sounds like your truck was used a lot in 4x4. under full vac. it will push the motor back and then snap in again and you will get a clunk
