I was once told in a very disreputable saloon that the way to open a safe was to drill a hole, fill it with water, then drop in a small charge of dynamite. The water stops paper (money, stocks, bonds, ...) from being burnt or shredded and puts the explosion directly on the walls/door instead of going to compress the air inside.

Of course the guy who told me that was more interested in working fast than almost anything else.
