First thing since you just got the tractor is to change the oil/filter. Use quality oil Chevron Delo 15W40, Shell Rotella 15W40, Mobil Delvac 1300 15W40. If smoking presists, then the previous owner or the dealer to meet the dyno HP expectations may have turned the pump up a little to much. Don't know abou the JD4020, but I have a NH and the manual tells how to adjust it a little at a time, by observing the smoke, when accelerating the engine when fully warmed up. Check your Operator Manual or Repair Manual. Tom
