The standard for the older pumps is 100 PSI.

(SOME furnace burners in these later years operate at 150 PSI.)

Don't mess with it unless you have a gauge to connect to the pump, and verify the setting.

If it is lighting "hard", and smoking when it finally lights off, the ignition electrodes (some are like a spark plug) may be burned back, so the gap is too wide.

Or, is may simply need a new nozzle.
