The sacrificial metal and the part to be cleaned should be within several inches of each other for best results. I use an old unintelligent battery charger on my setup. Generally I find that if everything is hooked up properly and you don't get the bubbles then more washing soda needs to be added. I find sheet metal covers from VCRs and old computers work well but need frequent cleaning. I do the small parts in one of my wife’s discarded stainless steel pans using it as the sacrificial metal. One key item I've seen people consistently do wrong. The sacrificial metal should have as much surface area as possible and surround the piece being cleaned.
