The reason n theory behind what you stated is also true for "jumping" and its so you dont create any sparks near the battery when connecting or removing the leads. While hooking up and unhooking during and after a charge or jump on lead acid batterys theres s greater likelihood of expolsive hydrogen gases present which is why the connection AWAY from the batterys gasses is recommended.
