you can charge each battery seperatly in the string. Ie if you have a 12 volt charger and 2 12 volt batteries hooked up in series to make 24v. you can clip the charger onto each 12 volt battery and charge that battery. Jump starting this way does not work very well though. I would seperatly charge each battery up and then start from the batteries.
