Probably got rust or dirt inthe tank plugging the hole and just is running out of fuel put a little stand pipe in there and more than likely problem will be solved If it were me I would not get rid of that inline fuel filter been running them for fifteen years on all of are old gassers just change the little dudes every so often it keeps any thing that passes the sediment bowl out of the carb I like the little clear plastic ones you can see if that got gas in them.
