The end of the piston fits into a recess in the cast-iron end-cap of the recoil spring. It's a loose fit - nothing holds it there but pressure from the track. Usually you can just lift if out by hand. If it's stuck, it's just rusty - assuming you've loosened the track already. Sometimes the stop-bolt inside the recoil spring assembly breaks and then you cannot loosen your track.
