the old greases would dry up after a few years. The oils that keep them soft will settle out and then the rest will just turn to a hard rusty looking stuff. I have seen large bucket of grease with a lot of the oil in the bottom of the bucket and the top of it hard as a rock. More modern greases will not do this or at least they take longer than we live to do it. Walt PS Like the guy said you have to clean and grease them once in while.
