Not much of one. I use hay that has been sittig out side for a few years so its moldy and almost to the point of being rotten. I have also in the past used leaves and or straw but since I had this old bale I used it this time. I also put it down thick so most things like grass will not come up and what does pulls easy because if grows in the hay not the ground under it. This area is mostly sand also which work well for root crops. I'll be planting a few other root crops in the same area in a day or 2 if it warms up enough that is
