You definately don't want to cut them off at ground level. They will grow back with a vengeance and loaded with thorns. I grub them around the farm with my backhoe. You will need to get down about 8" to make to kill the root. The backhoe is definately the way to go if they are really thick or very large. I've grubbed more than my fair share with a grubbing hoe too. This works fine if the trees are small and you get at least 8 inches of the root. Tom
