Using only automatic transmission probably has more to do with engine controls and economy than anything else. The new transmissions are completely computer controlled so the engine can always be running for optimum performance. The transmission will shift to avoid lugging and over loading the engine. With electric throttle control the computer will control both the air (gasoline) and fuel entering the engine and really tries to keep the operator from abusing anything.
