I have a 2004 Duramax with 6 speed manual. It has been worked, but treated respectfully. At 9500 miles an awful noise developed between the engine and transmission. One service guy and I guessed it to be the throw-out bearing. We went to get the opinion from the main transmission mechanic at the dealership (large dealership sells lots of 3/4ton - 2ton trucks) and he listened for 10 seconds said it was the flywheel and that they had come up with an updated replacement for the original 2004 flywheel. I have driven many manual transmissions in all different size vehicles, but the duramax/6 speed is far from the most enjoyable and I like many others have been driving manual transmissions for over 35 years. It is okay on the open road (you’re not shifting) or in town with 5000 to 15000#s behind it, but there is no fun or pleasure to driving it empty in even the lightest of urban/suburban traffic. I ordered a truck for a friend at the same time, but with the Allison and he is tickled to death with it. I do not hate mine (I bought the 6-speed because of the price difference and that is where my money ran out. People that I know that work their trucks hard and use manual transmissions all have Fords or Dodges and are happy with them. Before you become too disappointed about it not being an option anymore you should drive a Duramax with a 6-speed and find out if you would have wanted one anyway. I have driven Fords and Dodges with the manual and was not expecting the Chevy to be the way it was when it arrived. My choice was based on a major price difference at the time. The pricing was for ordering a truck and all quotes were for equally equipped trucks. The last truck I ordered was a Ford F-550 with a 6-speed, but it has not come in yet.
