GM and Ford diesels don't have the low-end torque to pull without winding them up to 2500 rpm or so. They are classified as light- duty engines while the Cummins in the Dodges is rated as a medium-duty engine. Ford and GM both have found that the torque converter makes up for a lot of the lack of low-end torque and helps insure that the engine's rods, crank, etc. are not loaded over the design limits. By the way, the new Dodge 6.7 CTD and recently released 6-speed auto is going to give the Allison boys heartburn. :-)
