Challenged: I know very little about a Fordson Major. But, you are correct about the wire through the ammeter loop. That type ammeter only indicates which way current flows in the wire through the meter loop and how much current is flowing. If you take the wire out and pass it through the loop in the opposite direction, all the meter's readings will reverse. If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably charging correctly, but with the wire through the loop installed backwards. That ammeter has no effect on the charging system's operation. If you have working lights, turn them on with engine off. Ammeter should show 'DIS', if it's wired correctly.
