Chris, From the description it sounds like cast iron ,and if you want success welding cast you will use o/a and cast iron rod ( cast iron in stick form ).Cast is very repairable with this method. Below is a link to some cast iron repair and some other things, take the tour there are about 250 pictures of assorted types of repair.
