Stuck PTO lever JD 5500

My JD 5500 has set unused for over a year.
Now the PTO lever will not engage.
Remove linkage and put 1 foot pipe on lever that goes into transmission and unable to engage. I put what I thought was sifficent pressure, but did not want to break anything but no success. Anybody have suggestions...I don't see an inspection plate and hate to split the tractor. I don't have any books to see how it is laid out.
