Seems it all depends on the price of the engine and how much work you can do. A lot of P-series Chevy vans have Cummins 3.9 diesels bolted to TH400 transmissions as well as 6.2 diesels, or 350 gas engines - all with the same drive-train. Perkins, Cummins, et. al. have a standard SAE mounting pattern - and GM uses adapters for the Cummins - just like Ford does with the IH 6.9 and 7.3s.
It seems good deals for the Cummins 3.9 are the most common since they were used in the P-vans.
In regard to gearing - no overdrive with up to 3.73 axle-ratio works out well enough for highway speeds of 65-75 MPH. 4.10 is pushing it - the the fuel mileage drops like a rock.
